There are several factors that can put you at risk. Read on to learn what the most common ones are so you can discover if you\u2019re at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which Factors Put You at Risk for Oral Cancer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the most common factors that can increase your risk of developing oral cancer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Using tobacco products:<\/strong> People who smoke cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, or use chewing tobacco are at higher risk for oral cancer. Approximately 90% of people with oral cancer use tobacco products.<\/li><li><strong>Drinking heavily:<\/strong> Heavy drinkers are most likely to be diagnosed with oral cancer. This number is even higher if you use tobacco products.<\/li><li><strong>Sun Exposure:<\/strong> Excessive sun exposure to the lips increases your likelihood of developing oral cancer.<\/li><li><strong>Human Papillomavirus (HPV):<\/strong> Oral cancer can be caused by HPV. This is typically found in the back of the throat, base of the tongue, and in the tonsils.<\/li><li><strong>Adults 45+:<\/strong> Anyone can get oral cancer, but it is more common in adults over the age of 45.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Common Symptoms of Oral Cancer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you notice any of the following signs, it is a good idea to bring them up to your dentist. When caught early on, oral cancer is often treatable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mouth sores<\/li><li>White or red patches<\/li><li>Swelling of the neck<\/li><li>Difficulty swallowing or chewing<\/li><li>Weight loss<\/li><li>Halitosis (bad breath)<\/li><li>Lump in the cheek<\/li><li>Difficulty moving jaw or tongue<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can You Prevent Oral Cancer from Developing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some precautionary measures that you should be taking to reduce your risk of developing oral cancer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Don\u2019t use tobacco products<\/li><li>Eat a healthy diet<\/li><li>Practice excellent dental hygiene<\/li><li>Only drink alcohol in moderation<\/li><li>Limit sun exposure<\/li><li>Use a lip balm containing SPF<\/li><li>Remove dentures every night and clean them daily.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Oral cancer is a very serious disease that can be life threatening.
